The United States Census provides detailed data in the form of Public Use Microdata Samples
(PUMS). PUMS data is at the level of the household and individual, but has been adjusted to protect
privacy so that specific people cannot be identified from the data.
Available PUMS data includes:
The 2000 Census. These are 5% samples of the original Census long form data.
The American Community Survey (ACS). This is an annual survey that updates Census
data. PUMS data for the 2006 ACS is available
Due to our experience mapping this data into a variety of complex market analysis schemas and
structures, we have developed the internal ability and tools to deliver on any of the following:
- Marketing-oriented interpretation of the Census data
• We can help a company understand the data and use it to formulate a marketing
campaign or engage in other demographic analyses.
- PUMS data tailored to a particular format and analysis structure
• For example, a company might want to aggregate the data according to certain
geographic or demographic fields and include it in an SQL database. We can
provide the aggregation and conversion.
- Summarized PUMS data
• We can provide customized cross-tabulations and other analyses of the data, going
beyond the standard analyses given by the Census. These can be provided in printed
form, in spreadsheets, or as tables suitable for access by SQL or other data
management programs.
- Sophisticated GIS processing
• The PUMS data is organized by Public Use Microdata Area (PUMA): each state is
divided into PUMAs, which do not necessarily observe county or other political
boundaries. Given a data set with street addresses or lat-long values, we can
associate each entry with a PUMA code, providing a bridge into PUMS data.
